GLP-1 Nausea and Side Effects: How to Manage Them

By TrimSoMo Editorial · · 2 min read

Most GLP-1 side effects are gastrointestinal, most are temporary, and most are manageable. Here's what to expect and how people get through the rough first weeks — without giving up.

The usual suspects

  • Nausea (the #1 complaint)
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea or loose stools
  • Reflux / "sulfur burps"
  • Reduced appetite (that's the point, but it can feel extreme)

These tend to be worst when you start or increase a dose, then ease as your body adjusts.

Practical ways to reduce nausea

  1. Eat smaller portions, slowly. GLP-1s slow stomach emptying — overfilling makes nausea worse.
  2. Stop at "satisfied," not "full." Push past it and you'll feel sick.
  3. Go easy on greasy, fried, and very rich foods, especially early on.
  4. Hydrate steadily through the day (also helps constipation).
  5. Don't lie down right after eating.

For constipation

  • More fiber and water; gentle daily movement.
  • Many providers okay an OTC stool softener — ask yours.

The golden rule: titrate slowly

Most side effects come from dose increases. If a new dose hits hard, ask your provider about staying at the current dose longer before stepping up. Slower titration = fewer side effects for many people. A good clinic will adjust your schedule rather than push you up on a fixed timeline.

When to call your provider (don't tough these out)

  • Severe or persistent vomiting / can't keep fluids down
  • Intense, lasting abdominal pain (especially radiating to the back)
  • Signs of dehydration (dizziness, very dark urine)
  • Any symptom that feels wrong or alarming

These can signal something beyond normal adjustment and deserve prompt medical attention.
